YouTube now has 1080p HD! All the video is shot with a Canon Vixia HF S10. I just cut some old footage together to test it out.

Some of the shots are taken from a Glidecam 200 pro. The Canon Vixia HF S10 has a good depth of field for a handheld camera. @ 2:08 you can see I loose control of the Glidecam for a second as the Canon Vixia HF S10 bounce around.

1080p is the shorthand name for a category of HDTV video modes. The number 1080 represents 1,080 lines of vertical resolution (1,080 vertical scan lines),[1] while the letter p stands for progressive scan (meaning the image is not interlaced). 1080p can be referred to as full HD or full high definition although 1080i (interlaced) is also "Full HD" (1920x1080 pixels). The term usually assumes a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, implying a horizontal resolution of 1920 pixels. This creates a frame resolution of 1920×1080. The frame rate in hertz can be either implied by the context or specified after the letter p (or i), such as 1080p30, meaning 30 Hz.[2]
A 1080p picture, with a resolution similar to that of 2K digital cinema technology, is sometimes referred to in marketing materials as "Complete High-Definition". However, 4K digital cinema technology is commercially available, and ultra-high definition video is in the research phase.
The meaning of 1080p as a display resolution is not correct because in fact 1920x1200/1920x1080 displays may or may not be able to display 1080p video. Use of 1080p and the closely related 1080i labels in consumer products may refer to a range of capabilities. For example, video equipment that upscales to 1080p takes lower resolution material and reformats it for a higher resolution display. The image that results is different from the display of original 1080p source material on a native 1080p capable-display. Similarly, equipment capable of displaying both 720p and 1080i may in fact not have the capability to display 1080p or 1080i material at full resolution. It is common for this material to be downscaled to the native capability of the equipment. The term "native 1080p-capable" is sometimes used to refer to equipment capable of rendering 1080p fully.

  • Hey bugilt - nice stuff, super clean export. I just picked up this camera and love it, the picture quality is amazing. What size are you compressing -- .mov 425 x 318? Do you deinterlace on the export? h264 codec?

    Many thanks for your help!

  • @MarkAndrewAnderson I export the video with H.264 1920x1080 and typically shoot at 30p. Shooting in 30p is progressive and keeps me from having to deinterlace. I'd also suggest turning off the steady shot if you plan on panning in your shot.

  • how do you upload footage from this camera to a mac because whenever i hook up my camera it doesn't recognize it on my mac. PLEASE RESPOND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @baconbits12321 I don't use use mac, but I heard you can use fcp to import the files.

Once connected, open FCP and go to the menu File > Log and Transfer and see if you can see your clips. Log and Transfer only works with HD clips, so if you have multiple format clips on your card, you may have difficulty using Log and Tansfer.

  • Oh my, I want the quality you have on this video ,its just amazing!

I've heard many good reviews on the canon vixia HF S10 but some videos I came across have poor quality, but this is by far the best!

    what software do you use?D:

oh and it looks as if you had a wonderful day with family and friends in the video :)

  • @VeronicaFeline I use premiere to edit and convert the video. You can get the same quality from other software. The HF-S10 uses AVCHD which has just recently became easier to edit and convert. When I first got the camera there were only a few options to convert the video into something that you could edit.

    thanks!

  • @MuffinBakers - it's in a MTS file format container as AVCHD. I don't think Windows Movie Maker supports the format, you have to convert it first. Cam does come with editing software, but it is worthless. Good question about the pausing...does not matter, makes a new file every time you stop or pause, however in the camera there is an option post record, to join / split files.

  • @bugilt - HF S10 does not support 1080p only 1080i, so shooting in 30 is pointless. Same as 24 mode...it may look prettier after, but in reality, the camera records everything in 60 and down converts from there; look it up, it's even mentioned on Canon's site.

Also, in reference to YouTube supporting video from this camera...this was supported long before you uploaded this video at the end of 2009. I was shooting with it in March of 2009 and it supported it (which is AVCHD) before then.

  • your spare time looks like a corporate well being video forced upon the worker masses in there lunch break in place of food.

  • @bugilt does the media file (.mov/avi) whatever it is, work with windows movie maker? also does this cam come with editing software? and last question can u pause it in the middle of a vid then start again? like a pause button? thanks :)

  • the kid in the rad grandpa hat throws like a girl lol
