Maoists have reportedly taken over acres of land in eastern Jharkhand. The five farmers had bought the land some time back and following the rains had started to cultivate it. [Krishna Mehta, Farmer]: "We had started cultivating the land. But one day the Maoists came and asked us, if we had bought the land? We said yes, how could we have said no? They took us along, as they wanted to ask us a few things. They interrogated us. And we told them that if it was their land we were ready to give away the land." The particular piece of land was community property before the Maoists acquired it. [Ayodhya Yadav, Farmer]: "People used to come here from various places to play and also practice for the police selections etc. The Maoists had come here and said that we must leave the land and we had to." The farmers also allege that the Maoists beat them up. Maoists have formally been labeled as a terrorist group by India's federal government.
