Beijing Olympic 2008 Theme entry - Tan Dun, Foster, Bocelli

Song title: One World One Dream
Composed by: Grammy award winning composer David Foster
Co-written and produced by: famous chinese composer Tan Dun
Lyrics by: Amy Foster, Tan Dun and Jane Huang Jingjie
Singer: Andrea Bocelli, rising Chinese star Zhang Liangying (Jane Zhang)
excerpt and video taken from: Beijing TV

Chinadaily.com.cn: "Featuring traditional Chinese instruments - the guzheng and erhu - and a world-music-style orchestration and chorus, the song showcases the universal love, friendship and warmth Chinese people bring to the world, Tan said."

"But I have never worked so hard: Tan kept changing things. The finished song is actually the 18th version," Foster said."

"I hope the song expresses the love between East and West, old and new, God and man, and men and women," Tan said, adding that his inspiration came from the scenes of people celebrating the end of World War II in 1945, in Times Square, New York.

"Strangers were hugging and kissing each other," he said.

"At the opening ceremony, I want there to be that kind of passion and love that we want to share with the people standing next to us, even strangers."

Personally, this is my favorite among the thousands of songs submitted so far. I've only heard about 50 of them though. :) Andrea Bocelli sing Mandarin so well you can't tell it's a non-chinese singing the mandarin part.

  • I cant believe that this song did not win. It is much better than You and Me

  • This is a truly beautiful song! Much better than "You and Me" IMHO.

How could Mr. Chen Qigang, as the music director of the Beijing Olympics, pick his

own song instead? What a scandal!!

  • Great song, still, Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon is much deeper music expression.

  • Where can I buy this song? Is there a CD with this song? Too bad that this wonderful song did get chance to be performed at the Beijing Olympics.

  • This is so unfortunate. I would rather have this song performed at the Beijing Olympics than the other song. This is a much better fit song for the ocassion.

  • oh wait?

so there was a competiton top pick this song kinda like they had here for our eurovison entry

  • OMG AMAZING! I am in love with this song! Is this song released on CD. I want a copy!

  • Great song!

  • Thank you for your answer.

  • He knew beforehand. As with all superstar, he was going to request special consideration, because he is currently the ONLY Chinese composer which has international acclaim, no less than an Oscar. He discussed at length with David Foster on the profit sharing issue even before submission.

  • Don't mean to doubt you, but really hard to believe! If it is standard, he should have known long before the event. Maybe there is a more plausible explanation?

  • If his song is picked, but on the condition that he has to surrender the copyright, and without any participation in royalty (which is the standard deal for all song entries), then commercially, he saw little benefit, since he is ALREADY famous (at least in his own view).
