that's called hybrid picking, and lots of people, especially the fusion guitarists are useing this technique for this smooth sound and ease of execution....this isn't new, Shawn Lane used it, Brett Garsed became famous for using it, etc, etc...
It's a good technique to have in your sonic arsenal, though.

i love the arrangements of your songs and your writing style. it's very unique. and your execution live is flawless. i have a question about your picking style... when you go into the faster progressions i noticed that you use your finger instead of the pick to play a string sometime. lol if im seeing things then tell me. but where did you pick that up?
