I wrote this song around 1985-6 and recorded it on a 4 track (Fostex X15) sometime in 1986. In recent times, folks have suggested that I wrote it about my mother, but I didn't, as my mum was only 60 years old or so at that time. About 20 years later though, it became very relevant to my mums situation.
It's a song about loneliness and isolation, partly inspired by an old lady I used to see peeking from her window, as I cut through a local council estate making my way into town for a Saturday night out. She would sometimes smile as I passed, then duck back behind her curtain, probably to settle down to watch 'The Price Is Right' or some other Saturday night TV show. I would have been 26/27 or so at the time and used to think as I passed ''I wonder what she did on a weekend evening before she got elderly''
At the time of writing the song, mugging seemed to have become a national pastime and I was forever reading about bogus callers (scum) preying on the elderly, hence the theme of the second verse.
Because it was recorded using analogue tape, there's a couple of audible clicks , but hopefully they don't spoil it for you.
If you like it, please leave a comment. I would love to hear your views.
Thanks
