This movie shows the rapid prototyping of a small part of a mississippi river boat. It is actually a test on modelling with 'hard'-wood with the purpose of making the whole boat as a demo-model. This video shows the process from 3D modeling on the computer using MicroStation V8i in this case and followed by the 3D physical modeling in hard-wood by de Roland MDX 540 subtractive rapid prototyping machine.

  • Very interesting video! Is the wood that connects the part to the rest of the block (I'd call it "sprue" if it were a mold) removed by hand?

  • Hello, thanks for your response.

The connection-parts are indeed removed by hand. In the video, these connection part are somewhat large (height = 5 mm) For this type of wood (beech) it showed that connection parts of 2mm height give enough strength to keep the model in place during the milling process.

Smaller connections save a lot of time afterwards removing them ! :-)

    Best regards.

  • great video! what type of wood is that?

  • Thanks for your response.

The wood that is used is 'beech'.
