Argentina recognizes Palestinian state; Uruguay to recognize Palestinian state

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak stated today that the Wikileaks affair and the crisis in Korea have served as temporary obstacles toward renewing a new settlement freeze leading some to believe a new agreement would be forthcoming.
However, this announcement may have been timed to discourage other nations from jumping on the bandwagon to recognize Palestine as a state. Although it's more of a symbolic recognition, it does state the will and direction of the global community. Israel certainly doesn't want a rash of nations rushing to recognize Palestine as a state along 1967 borders. That kind of support could apply pressure on the US to recognize the will of the international community.
The Obama administration said a new set of directions that would push forward Middle East peace would be disclosed later this week.

Excellent news, Argentina, Uruguay, Brasil, and now Chile recogise the Palestinian state. Waiting for the US and Israel is a waste of time as all they have ever done for peace is to veto it. If Israel has a right to exist then so has Palestine.

But if someone wants to talk about peace, then I have to agree with our colleague down here: want peace around the world? Then take the US OFF the global scene as the sole voice, and share the decisions among all people involved.
