95% of the ocean is remained unexplored, and you're telling me that mermaids don't exist? Fuck you.

You bring up a good point, copyright laws were different back in the days of "Snow White" and "Cinderella." And I don't remember seeing anything relating to the original source material in the credits to any of the Disney films from "Snow White" and up.

bophie1 also mentioned to you that if a version of a fairy tale character appeared in media OUTSIDE of Disney, but one that looks or behaves identical to the Disney version, then the company can sue whoever did that over just that.

But they aren't actually sueing over things like someone using Snow White's name, they and everyone else are well aware that isn't their name. However they could over something like a mermaid being name Ariel because Ariel is THEIR mermaid because Hans Christian Anderson's Little Mermaid was just referred to as that not by a name. They could also sue for something like a new Snow White being made with the titular character wearing a strikingly similar outfit. These are their trademarks.

"Betcha in land, they understand, that they don't reprimand their daughters."

Ariel has no idea of what I am going through.

I do believe that Disney has sole rights because they have sued so many people for just using or saying names from their stories even though they didn't actually create those characters. I also don't know if they actually mention the Grimm Fairy Tales in their credits or even the Grimm brothers. I think they can get away with it because at the time a lot of Disney's classic movies were made like Snow White and Cinderella copyright laws were different.

Ariel, we humans enjoy overfishing in your waters and we accidentally caught your mother and sold her as exotic tuna. Stay in the ocean for your own good.
