The filly star Serena's Song ran another memorable race against colts today and outran seven of them in the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga. But she could not outrun the eighth, a 5-year-old horse named Mahogany Hall, who charged from deep in the pack to snatch the race in the final 50 yards.

Mahogany Hall did it the hard way, too. He ran in the Kentucky Derby with a sore ankle two years ago and later missed a solid year of racing from May last year to May this year.

Then he ran second in both the Brooklyn Handicap and the Suburban, both times behind Wekiva Springs, one of Bill Mott's warhorses, and he was knocking on the door today with his finishing kick.

He also did it with a somewhat obscure trainer, James Baker of Kentucky, a 39-year-old who has been conditioning horses on his own for only six years. But he had previously worked for Shug McGaughey and Frank and David Whiteley, so he did his homework, and he was all proper and subdued when his horse staged his dramatic comeback today.
