Hitting children teaches them that violence and hurt is a way to influence people. Parents can definitely go overboard. Especially if they are creeps and it feels good for them to gain power over a child. I'm not saying you shouldn't give them a smack on the bum if they ran in to the road like crazy, you should exercise restraint when it comes to children and using physical punishment.

@filmcruiser88: 1) His father may have went off of the deep end with the beating but then again, Henry hadn't been to school in MONTHS. If it were me, I'd be pissed off too. 2) Using the belt is legitimate method for raising children. When done properly, it is not abuse or form of torture.....it's DISCIPLINE. My father lit me up when I messed up as a kid and I thank him immensely for it. 3) There is no need to legalize corporal punishment since it's already legal in the home in all 50 states.

I'm not trying to justify Henry's father, but I'm sure thats the way he was raised, with beatings and yelling, he doesn't know any other way to raise his son.
