AlienWare m17x R3 upgrade GPU replacement

Tutorial dedicated for upgrading a gtx460m to gtx485m.


This film is a tutorial step by step:
1) removing GPU gtx460m from AW m17x R3
2) Cleaning a GPU
3) Installing Pads and Thermal component
4) how to remove the switch retention clip from gtx485m and gtx460m
==/!\ Step 4 need to be done before step 3 /!\
Step 4 is due of gtx485m retention clip incompatible with AW M17x R3

The video stop at 32min 25s because the last step didn't come correctly, it's black as you will see.

Driver needed (3D vision doesn't work with gtx 485m ): for gtx460m and gtx485m alienware m17x R3

You GPU might have freeze has gtx580m while playing if not good cooling condition. Put something behing your laptop for rising it about 2cm and launch Hwinfo64 in sensor mod for putting the fan control at Min 2000 and Max 4100 ( 4096 for only the GPU ) !! and your freeze will disapear:)

What cards are combatible with the m17x?

I want to upgrade from a 6870,and I don't now what to buy :L

Also,price is a concern.

but if you got a 6870, i think you might have the R3, u can upgrade with gtx460m, gtx485m, gtx580m, but it disapear from the store ( the gtx580m) bcse maybe new cards will came but never buy the 675m because its a 580m renamed ;) but the 680m will be a true kepler;) If you got 60Hz screen, you can also choose HD6970m or HD 6990m.( not for 120Hz screen)

@Syredisa057 Go for the gtx580m, its better than gtx485m, better temp ( and 3D available if you got 120hZ screen) but if you can wait a little, maybe the new gpu like a gtx 6xx can bi fixed inside if they still use the mxm 3B . I ll buy one as soon as it's on the market to test it ;)

@fca6 Sure, I'm still using it perfectly without throttling on A04 Bios mod ( but my gtx485m is running at 1.03V mod )

@Syredisa057 The M17xR3 is known to throttle back performance with the A08 BIOS. There is a modded BIOS for it that reduces the throttling and unlock other features such as disabling the Optimus features (if you have them). The eBay only had one GTX 485M due to a purchase mistake that he made for a workstation based Dell notebook. If you can find a GTX 580M, I would recommend going with it as it does run cooler than the 485M. Other than that, the feature set is the same other than clock speeds.
