I like my iPhone, but I'm also pretty rough on my personal electronic gear. Add to that the fact that the iPhone's beautiful screen has very little to defend it from an edge drop and you've got a recipe for disaster. The main reasons that the iPhone sounds so bad is really just ATT's network, I've never used a phone on it that sounded as clear as a landline or VOIP. ATT has some serious network infrastructure issues that aren't really getting fixed. I don't really see Apple renewing the exclusivity contract unless the other carriers can't because of their current exclusivity contracts with competing phones.

Yup... the bottom line is that ATT's network is horribly oversubscribed and they don't make enough money off the iPhone to really invest in infrastructure. (The last estimate I heard was that 17 months of a 2-yr contract go towards paying Apple.)

Still, I plugged a T-Mobile SIM into my unlocked iPhone and it sounded worse than my 3-yr old HTC Wizzard, so there is a component of the audio crapidelity that can be blamed on the hardware itself.

I TOTALLY feel that. I think the iPhone is one of best personal electronic devices I have ever owned, but also the WORST cell phone I have ever used and completely undeserving of the monthly premium.

I wish there was a way to cancel the voice service and keep data only... then I could afford to buy a cheap cell phone/plan that would work/sound 100x better!

If you look at the breakdowns of the iPhone you can see why, the speaker is really small compared to other phones. That beveled edge comes at a price.

Have you tried any bluetooth headsets(Jawbone?) with the 3GS? What about using the headphones that came with it? I bet there would be at least some improvement even if it isn't a real solution.

I have a 3G and have never really had an issue with sound quality outside of people on the ATT network being much louder than everyone else.

there is a more serious case. it is the otterbox armor. it is completely waterproof up to 3 ft. i have it for first gen ipod touch and it is pretty cool using a touch underwater
