  • @josemiguel95 Muchas gracias, estimado senor. Aunque el espanol es mi lengua segunda, no tengo muy bien dominio respeto al espanol ahora, porque no lo uso mucho hoy en dia:) 1Gracias otra vez!

  • @stevevandien Dear sir, there is no need to apologize at all. It's only matter of different opinions about something, which is not bad. I agree with you with the concept of a bass with a baritone extension. One of the best versions of Le Nozze di Figaro that I've heard is with Van Dam. Unfortunately he probably decided to explore other tones, like in Di Provenza, which was not his comfort zone, as you said.

This has happened to other singers as well. Receive my regards from Mexico.

  • @josemiguel95 OK, I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions. I haven't heard this particular performance, so had no right to react as I did. Please accept my apologies. Van Dam had (has?) a rather wide range. I recall at least one critic who described him as a bass with a baritone extension. Given that, he was able to cross fachs quite a bit, singing, for example, both Macbeth and Fillippo. Even so, "Di provenza" might well have been a little too far out of his comfort zone:) -

  • @stevevandien I respectfully disagree with you. Other singers have also given perfect performances, let's just remember Di Stefano, Francisco Araiza, Tito Gobbi or Maria Callas and many others. Jose van Dam was a great singer, there is no doubt on that. But there was a recording of him singing Di provenza il mar from La Traviata, a studio recording, that was just horrible. I looked for the video to show it to you but it has been deleted because it received a lot of negative comments.

  • @josemiguel95 No singer has ever given 100 percent perfect performances. Given that, why do you say this about van Dam?

  • Beautiful singing and accompaniment. Very high level of artistry and beauty.

  • That's a gift from God himself.

  • A great artist with a rich, powerful and BEAUTIFUL voice --
