This looks like a great idea, and quite labor intensive for one person...but I know I can do it :-) What about watering? I hope this doesn't sound too ignorant, but does the water seep out the sides after watering the garden? Many thanks!

@ilelar It is really a good bit of labour. Why they called it lazy beds is beyond me. There are many different ways of making beds. Different systems. This one is great if you are starting of with a lawn or a field. I guess it is less work than getting rid of the sods + you really get all the goodness and soil from your pathways. The water usually stays in the soil, but it really depends on what kind of soil you have. If you keep most soils nice and damp, they will absorb more water better. :)

This all makes very good sense. The main problem I am dealing with seems to be rather poor sandy soil to start with. We're within a mile of the ocean and digging down as little as a foot hits gravel and sand. Raised beds then?

@nokomarie1963 It is a good bed system for when you do not have as much top soil aright. You can use it as a start to making raised beds, as in using boards to go all the way around. Add as much comost to your beds should fix any future problems you may encounter. Good luck :)
