busses are scalable, flexible, cost effective, can be swapped out if one fails, take folks where they want to go, can run on any number of fuels from electric to diesel.
the idea of free passes is a brilliant one...and the beauty of it is that it can be tried tomorrow and a study performed in realtime.
if you guys want to be chumps you just go ahead and bite off the rail plan...it's a shit sandwich. enjoy
the presenter offer an excellent alternative, free buses.
i have many friends who telecommute, have 4/10 workweek, flextime & so forth. they all report that the deviation from standard traffic times has returned them from 5-10 hours a week in saved time and also saves them significant money & adds to quality of life.
here's my idea...cease moving people daily to their jobs & instead work toward moving the jobs to them ONCE. doing this for just 20% of commuters would make a big difference
with no due respect hwilke01, you need to research how incredibly expensive rail projects are & how they typically FAIL at their goal. this is not theory...there are examples all over. the closest is in san diego's north county where our Sprinter light rail BLEW THROUGH 90 million to a final 500 million and never attained the 12,000 riders a day projected. it gets 7,000, 3/4's of which are poached from bus ridership. pathetic FAIL.
the SD trolley also reports a 3/4's bus rider poach
Those that can't do; teach. Gentlemen, with all due respect, go back to your ivory tower, teach your theories on metropolitan management and let the 'do'ers' fix things. Another recommendation... move to Kapolei and commute to your office in Manoa and see if you change your tune. You are professors, with no experience whatsoever in actually making decisions that affect lives. You simply sit in your offices and talk about theories. Rail is a real solution to a real problem.
Same talking points for years... Face it professors, Rail Will Happen. Your children will thank us later.
