NOTE: For the majority of people viewing this who don't know anything about pickups, They come on all electric guitars and basses. Many people upgrade their pickups from the stock ones. Those who build guitars need to either buy or build their own. They need somekind of winding device to build them. I intend to build my own pickups for my guitar company. This will cut about $80-$160 off the cost of each guitar I build. The potential value is limited only by the number of guitars I can sell.

For a detailed look, I have some photos posted here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35726319@N05/3307056223/in/photostream/

This is my homemade pickup winder for the 100 hour challenge. For those who don't know what pickups are, think of them as a little microphones for electric guitars. They 'pickup' the sound made by the guitar strings.

Pickup winders usually costs a few hundred dollars. Pickups usually cost about $100 for good ones. The parts to make a pickup usually cost under $20. Once you have the machine, making your own pickups can save a lot of money!

I made this machine from an old $4 Sony recorder from SWAP. I took out all the unnecessary audio/recording stuff. I made a new belt out of the mic cable to spin both wheels clockwise/counterclockwise. Then i rearranged a bunch of the pieces to turn this hunk of metal into a pickup winding machine!

(Sorry about the poor qualilty video. I'll see if I can post a new one that actually shows what's going on)

  • Nice job! My first winder was made from an old cassette recorded.

  • SMART ! More elegant than the typical DIY pickup winders.

  • Hey cousin - good job, although I really don't know much about what you are talking about! LOL! But, it really looks like a great product for winding !
