Reason.tv presents Citizens Against Government Waste's Porker of the Month for February 2011:

Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY)!

Rep. Nadler is pushing full steam ahead on a $53 billion spending spree for High Speed Rail projects. This of course is after the 8 billion spent on High Speed Rail in the stimulus bill. Both barely begin to cover the estimated $500 billion dollars required for the plan, which many state governments have already rejected due to the massive cost.

Congratulations Rep. Nadler, you are Citizens Against Government Waste's Porkers of the Month for February, 2011!

"Porker of the Month" is written and produced by Austin Bragg. Approximately 2 minutes.

  • Is this the same guy who passed that law forbidding the use of an "electronic device" while crossing the street?

  • @Sexycosy - As a matter of fact, I am actually the result of Public K-12, and PRIVATE college. Don't strawman and ridicule.others. Your argument was highly fallacious, as I could find 3 TYPES of fallacies in 1 entry. I was replying to your strawman saying that this group was basically racist and narrow-minded.

Again, address my point before ridiculing.

In addition, HOMESCHOOLING HAS CONSISTENTLY OUTPERFORMED PUBLIC SCHOOLS! So, I'll take your attack as a compliment.

  • we drive cars and trucks, people dont ride trains except back east. you want your trains, then great. so YOU pay for them. hugely expensive. dont ask us to pay for them. trains move cargo and easterners, and coal. maintain the rails we have with a fraction of the money.

  • maybe "Progressive" Insurance can fund and own this.

  • Nothing to see here, just continue to drive your cars.

  • This exchange of views could only be happening in the US of A - the only country in the developed world where a rail network is considered controversial. While this debate long ago moved on elsewhere in the world, the Yanks still manage - somehow - to find this topic divisive, against all the odds. I guess the backwoods mentality is still strong among perhaps as much as half of the population. Latter-day Davy Crocketts, still (mentally) living on the wild frontier - not in the 21st century.

  • @Sexycosy - Now, the assertion that homeschooling "by definition" creates narrow-minded socially retarded culturally incompetent people is pure nonsense, sir.

Socially, homeschooled children exhibit fewer behavioral problems, according to Drs. Raymond Moore, and Patricia Lines. In addition, homeschooled children have MORE regular access to museums, libraries, and do get out in their own neighborhoods. According to Dr. Raymond Moore, some children have adverse reactions to large groups.

  • @Sexycosy - Nice appeal to ridicule, emotional appeals, etc.

According to the Home School Legal Defense Association, home schooling students score ON AVERAGE in the 86th percentile of Public School standardize tests (where 50 is the average for Public School)

According to the Riverside Publishing Company, home schooling students scored better than 73-79% of Public School students on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.

Homeschooled children outperform public school children on academia. It's true.

  • @rocketplumber so they collect nearly $80 Billion in gas taxes according 2 u... how much do they dole out 4 roads?...

  • @Slipknotyk06 "Homeschooling has consistently outperformed public schools" in what? Marrying cousins? Starting basement churches? Abusing children and wives? Reciting bible verses? Homeschooled people BY DEFINITION r narrow minded (lacking exposure 2 the world). ONLY socially retarded and culturally incompetent people r so irresponsible 2 try and teach their own children when they can barely read. This is akin 2 child abuse!! ... and that breeds racism among other atrocities.

  • I think more rail lines and train stations would be good for America. But I think we need to fix the economy first, lower taxes, reduce spending, pay off our dept and stop borrowing money to pay for things we can't afford.

  • @Ragnarokgn We know OUR TRAINS SUCK ASS!!! That's why we r trying 2 make it better. It is not JUST the speed of the trains, it is the ENTIRE system. Best examples r the Spanish (Madrid-Sevile) Japanese (Tokyo-Osaka) and Chinese (Beijing-Shanghai). Some started when population densities were LOWER than in our proposed initial corridors. Rail is cheaper, safer, cleaner than roads. And we make the electricity right here :-)
