The initial idea and inspiration came from John Lennon's son's picture. The name of the picture really was Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds because that is what Julian Lennon named it after a girl in his class. However, the images described in the song are, I believe, from John's own hallucinations while he was drugged out on LSD.

Ok so it's about his son's picture. You still have to admit that the idea the song was going to be taken as a metaphor for LSD crossed his mind. Their image was based around the counterculture and so was their fan base and a big part of counterculture was dropping acid.

@STANDBYtheband21 Paul Mccartney said himself that John wrote it about LSD don't so naive. John Lennon also admited to have near if not 1,000 trips. Obviously a lot if insiration came from it. If you disagree then you obviously haven't taken the drug.
this song is about a picture john's son had drawn about a girl he had liked named lucy. the picture was a girl in the sky with stars in the backdrop. John Lennon has stated this himself. get your head out of your ass
