Elgar's March No. 1 was composed in 1901 and dedicated " To my friend Alfred E. Rodewald and the members of the Liverpool Orchestral Society ".
The best known of the set, it had its premiere, along with the more reserved second March, played by the Liverpool Orchestral Society conducted by Alfred Rodewald, in Liverpool on 19 October 1901. Both marches were played two days later at a London Promenade Concert in the Queen's Hall London, conducted by Henry Wood, with March No. 1 played second, and the audience "... rose and yelled .. the one and only time in the history of the Promenade concerts that an orchestral item was accorded a double encore."
Preformed By the : Berlin Philharmonic
Conducted By : Daniel Barenboim

heck, i wish this march would've been left alone instead of being remebered as "the prom music". 0:01 to 1:49 is my favorite part, and when it's repeated at the end. it has more of the energetic, millitant march motif to it. from the very first time i heard it, i couldn't (and still can't) get it out of my head! and what for, anyway, it's a damn good tune! one of my favorites next to Garry Owen(even though the latter is the 7th cavalry's march theme.)

@SimonTheRightWing - Yes, I know that P&C was military in origin, but it's still a magnificant piece of music. Many brides walk down the aisle to Wagner's Bridal Chorus, even knowing that Wagner was an anti-Semite. But they love the music, and they glow that much more by using it for their weddings. But in terms of P&C - how can it be overused when people still insist that it be played at their graduations? At my own HS graduation, different music was chosen - and I'm STILL pissed!

@SimonTheRightWing - This piece was written in 1901 - long before WW1. It is played at graduations because a friend of Elgar's featured "P&C" as the recessional (not the processional as we do now) at his school's graduation exercises (I want to say Yale, but I might be wrong). Other schools copied that use of it, and the tradition continues. You need to check your facts better, Purist. Just sayin'.
