August 27, 1983 Reading Rock Festival
Marillion played a great show that night. This is a little tribute.
They were at stage just before Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan in a heavy day. Nevertheless, Marillion was the best band that night.
Andy Ward, suposedly the band drummer, was introduced on percussion. Beside him another drummer: John Martyr on loan from the Bernie Marsden Group. This was in preparation for Andy's departure.
Line-up:
Fish - Vocals
Steve Rothery - Guitar
Peter Trewavas - Bass
Mark Kelly - Keyboards
John Martyr - Drums
Andy Ward - Percussion
This was the last Reading Festival at Little John's Farm. In 1984 and 1985, the local council banned the festival.
In 1986, the council gives permission to use the fields adjacent to the original festival site.
This is an aperitive for the upcoming:
Marillion: The Early Stages (Official Bootleg Box Set 1982-1987)
is a 6 CD box set containing archive material of Marillion's performances taken from BBC recordings, Radio Clyde and the EMI archive. Released on 17th November.

The wrist band ticket and the picture of the crowd are mine... by the way, it's a picture of Black Sabbath. I have no pictures of Marillion (my damn camera)
Music - Radio broadcast
Sorry for the little cut at 3:32
@zazz63 yes if only marillion had covered classics like illegal alien and tell me why. and sacked ian mosely and pete trewavas they could have been a decent tribute band.

i thought the bottling was cool... when big country and marillion the next day came on about the same time during the sunset reading rock festival looked like some kind of medival battle ground with banners rising up from the crowds with wood smoke in the air and these plastic bottle fights starting up all over the place. Had to watch out for the full ones tho... i can only assume they were full of piss. Great atmosphere ... it would never happen today ..too sterile.

I remember being right in the middle of the big bottle fight very scary as the guy next to me had a glass bottle smash on the back of his neck. Lots of blood. I was flat out on the floor with my boyfriend on top of me trying to protect me.

Great times met my wife here she had just turned 16 and we are still together and I remember the two birds in the campsite that put on a lesbian and show for whoever wanted to watch and then took a young lad with a broken leg into their tent with them. After 1/2 and hour he had to sneek out when their "boyfriends" came back from the pub. I guess he lost his cherry but was scared that he was going to get beat up all weekend LOL Happy days remembering being young and stupid.

Thats were I first heard Marillion and got hooked for life.
LabRat6619 From what I remember a few Hells Angels tried to get into the arena with their motorcycles, but weren't let in. They came back later with great forces and forced their way in. They parked their bikes somewhere in the back of the arena and that was pretty much it. My memory might be a bit off though, you know how it is.
