For the first time since the EBT ceased common carrier operations, M-1 caretaker Courtney Brown successfully operated the Peter Smith boiler heating system. The Peter Smith coal boiler works on the principal of thermo dynamics. The coal fire heats the steel coils looped inside the boiler. As the water heats, like air, it rises, forcing the colder water into the bottom of the boiler where it is heated as it rises through the coils. The boiler received a thorough cleaning and the entire system was checked and hydro-tested to 80psi. The initial fire up tested the entire system for leaks and tested the safety to lift at 60psi. Under normal operating conditions, the system is normally not under any pressure. This video shows the blow down of the heating system after the successful test.
