Ninja most active in the Sengoku? Certainly, but - at least if one holds to the Iga/Koga tradition - the groups active after the fall of the Taira (dispersed throughout the Awa region in the main) still seem to have held the practicalities of the straight blade dear to their hearts.

For myself, this is where the putative origin of the ninjato lies (though i admit that I too am only speculating on scant evidence - as there is insufficient evidence for anyone to make an authoritative claim).
