Toby Dog's tune by Tim van Eyken, from my show The Adventures of Abney and Teal. Just right for playing on a 19th Century english fretless banjo that I rebuilt and restored a few years ago.

  • Yeah, its a long way below. Perhaps even an octave, but that's not unusual for fretless banjos. I dunno what I'd call it. It's frailing or clawhammer picking, but the tune isn't an old-time one so it's just me messing around really!

With the melodeon I'd suggest not over-thinking it and just squeezing! I couldn't get on with it myself and went back to chromatic accordion.

  • The second part sounds a bit like "Come Along Cindy" on the banjo. Lovely sound and playing!

  • This sounds a long way below standard 5 string tuning, am I right? Also, what style of music would you call this? Old-time? I'm trying to find a melodeon tutorial to give me some of the basics, and can't find anything suitable. Perhaps I need to page Mr Van Eycken personally ;)

  • Mr Banjo man, I salute you. Fantastic animation, fantastic music. My son loves it, as do I.
