"The Answer is: My Mother, Angela Tincher, and Your Transcript"
Alumni Distinguished Professor Gary Downey addresses 1500 Virginia Tech graduates and families at their December 2008 graduation ceremony. His address asks "What Connects You to Virginia Tech?" He describes how he got to college, how the Virginia Tech shootings changed his identity, and how the image of the Hokie Nation, by performing nationalism, is both compelling and limited. He concludes by pointing to the transcript as a key indicator of privilege, difference, and the fundamental connection this ceremony establishes.
Note: please let Dr. Downey know if you have a photo of him jumping up and down to "Enter Sandman"
