Welcome (or welcome back!) to my mid-life crisis. I have been playing this song for a couple of weeks as part of my not-very-successful attempt to build stamina by playing fast songs. It's a very simple song to play, but fun nonetheless, and a great 80s anthem. It's also good for practicing timing (as you can see, I need the practice) and quick double crashes with quick double kicks, something I was having a bit of trouble with. And left-hand crashes for that matter.

For any other beginner (or other) drummers out there who may wish to learn the song from this video, this is, I am pretty strongly convinced, almost exactly like the band played it in the studio (bad timing aside), so hopefully it can serve as a good model from which you can improve upon this effort. The only difference from the original, I think, is that a real hi-hat has more gradual range of opening sounds. Mine doesn't, the key weakness of an otherwise great electronic kit. This is evident from around 2:34 in this video.

Forgive the crappy undershirt. I just came back from work and didn't waste much time in sitting down at the drums.

A note on dates: I started playing drums around Christmas 2010, so I have owned a drum set for about 7 months. But I didn't play at all in March and April as I was on the road, including an emergency deployment to Japan after the earthquake/tsunami. This sucked since I had to start over with the blisters and muscle burn and stuff when I got back. But I am not going to claim to having played for 5 months or 7 months or whatever, since I don't want people saying "Life's tough. I have to walk the dog every day, the kids are a pain, and the missus makes me mow the lawn instead of drumming" and so on. So I will just say I have played for 2 months, then not for 2, and then played for 3 again. I leave it to you to figure out what that means.

The set is a Roland TD-4KX with additional CY-8 crash cymbal (I know, I know, I live in an apartment). Sound is mixed on Sonar 8 Producer's Edition (EQ-ing the kick and hi-hat on the original track down) via Soundblaster sound card input, and then added to video from my cheap digital Sony camera with Sony Vegas (a MAJOR upgrade from Windows Movie Maker, which is a total piece of crap). The sync is good on my computer, but it always seems to get screwed up when I upload. Let's see if it happens this time too.....

And, perhaps, if I sucked badly enough, as a parody too (Just kidding copyright people. that last point was a joke.)

  • @BucksCountyTrikker Bit late in replying to your comment, sorry! I loved these guys in the 80s, and then again when I moved to PA. (other end, the 'Burgh...) in the early 90s, where they were still big. Really fun song to play. Thanks for the comment!

  • Nice job! I grew up in Philadelphia (Hooters hometown) and those guys were a big deal in the 80's. Nice work keeping the speeds.

  • @Triplexke Thanks for commenting! Nice to hear from you. Amazingly, I had never heard Whiskey in the Jar until you mentioned it. But I see your point, a good song to play at this stage. I will give it a try. How's the drumming going? Any chance of a video soon ;-) Hope you are still having fun with it!

  • Keep rocking dude ;) Well done :) If you want an "easy" song to build stamina, I like Whiskey in he jar by Metallica. Good to build up your hi-hat-stamina, without having to reach extreme speeds :)
