Come to think of it, I don't think it's Phil Palmer. From all I've heard, Phil just doesn't play like that. It must be Paul Franklin on the pedal steel. It's just that his steel on this particular evening seems amped with more distortion than usual and thus sounds very much like a conventional guitar. What he's doing here and there is clearly more in the province of a pedal steel. Mark and Paul trading licks is so awesome. I'd give a slight edge on this particular nite to Paul, though.
It sounds like two separate guitars are playing off one another here at the end. Is it Phil Palmer vs. Mark? Whether it's two guitarists or just Mark, it's unreal!
I am a big Dire Strait and Mark Knopfler fan. Thank you capsel31 for uploading this song and all other Dire Strait and Mark Knopfler videos and songs.
I've been searching for other versions of this song (besides Knebworth '90 and Notting Hillbillies versions, I mean), and here it is, I have found it!
Oh! My! God! This sounds even better than those two above mentioned versions. The guitar solo is sooooo exquisite. Simply breathtaking!
Once again, I am firmly convinced that Mark Knopfler is made of pure awesomeness.
