Yes you can use it as a dvd writer, and regular dvd rom. You can use it to install your games and programs

My Samsung SE-S084F external USB cd/dvd burner works with a single USB cable and gets his power from the same USB cable so no external power source required. It's the best accessoiry for my Asus 1215N netbook and i just love to watch DVD movies on my netbook with VLC media player or a better media player like PowerDVD.
