Summer festival in Hibarigaoka (in Tokyo) in August of 1991. Many scenes of the bon-odori (dancing) on the shotengai (shopping street) and taiko (drum) playing. [ ひばりヶ丘夏祭り、1991年の八月 ]

  • Those drummers are terrific. It's great that most everyone got into the dancing. I'm sorry that this doesn't happen anymore.

  • It still happens, but this particular shopping street isn't doing so well, so there are fewer sponsors. And even if they've stopped having it here (I think they still have it though), there are many other places where they have it. I went to one in a different part of town a couple of weeks ago that had a good turn-out. I'll try to get some video I took of that posted - I just need to invest in the necessary editing time! - LHS

  • Ooohh... 夏祭り!Cool!

Gold fish scooping, you get any? ^^

    Looks like so much fun.

あの一番の言う人は迷子になった見たいね~ wwwIt's a good thing I'm not it crazy mode right now or I really will play. (*≧∇≦)/

  • Didn't try the goldfish deal that time. It's fun, but it's distracting to have the people going home from the station walking right through the middle of the dancing group. - LHS

  • no it is not boring,,, love Japan and enjoy the video tks

  • Thanks for saying that! I always hope an edited clip will be interesting, but they often don't turn out as good as I hope.... - LHS

  • Time - yeah, that's what I keep thinking! An eight-year-old kid in this video would be 26 now! This is also (I think) the last street festival on the Hibarigaoka shotengai before they finished building Parco, which has a large food section in the basement. Business on the shotengai took an immediate dive as soon as they opened Parco, so this is possibly even of some historical interest. I think they still have the festival, but there are fewer stores now and less money to spend on this. - LHS

  • Cool Lyle! I love these festivals in Japan, especially the street food. All the kimonos and traditional dances and songs are cool as well. Just think, all the kids on this video are adults now.

Does time fly or what? 1991 doesn't seem like it should be 18 years ago.

  • First... viewer? Ah! That's it, right? Thanks for watching. It's a boring video, but I still spent several hours editing it today... - LHS
