This is a video of the Gurkhas attending a reception at 10 Downing Street following the Governments decision to allow settlement rights.

All former Gurkhas who gave more than four years service will now be granted the right to apply for settlement in the UK along with their families.

The new measures were announced to Parliament by then Home Secretary Jacqui Smith following meetings in Downing Street between the Prime Minister and Gurkhas representative Joanna Lumley.

The ex Home Secretary announced that around 1400 outstanding applications sitting with the UK Border Agency will be processed as a matter of urgency.

The new guidance will extend the settlement rights for Gurkhas - previously only those who retired after July 1997 were eligible to settle in the UK.

The Prime Minister said the Government was the first to grant settlement rights to the Gurkhas & was the first to equalise pay and pensions.

He said over 6,000 former Gurkhas & their families already had the right to live in the UK & in April the Government took steps to increase the number of Gurkhas eligible.

Prime Minister Brown said:

This Government respects the will of the House of Commons & recognises the strong feeling and public support for this cause. Consequently, we have announced today that all former Gurkhas who served for longer than four years will be eligible to apply for settlement in the United Kingdom.

Miss Joanna Lumley said:

Hes (Brown) invited all these Gurkha people who are celebrating like mad, the fine, fine decision hes made. So its a day of huge celebration, great happiness. The Prime Minister has changed a lot of lives & has made many many hundreds of thousands, millions of people extremely happy.

  • Woolas, fucking weasel !!!!!!

  • Gorkha were fighting for British since 200 years and they were brave , loyal and honest. I was sad to hear the inequality and injustice to those brave soldiers who fought for Britain and British people. Many immigrants are allowed in Britain from India, Pakistan , Africa ..but why not Gorkha ?? why this questions did not come to the mind of British government and authority first. Thanks Johanna . You are simply great human being .

  • Its a shame that it took a judgment from the High Court for the government to take back what they originally wanted.

All that crap Brown was flaunting when it was his government that wanted to keep them out of Britain.

It is to the judiciary of England we should be looking to and giving thanks for them appreciating what these men have done for Britain.

Better to die than live a coward!

I hear the SAS pay these guys for protection.

  • Finally The country greatest and most loyal friends finally get the proper recognition.

  • *wipes tear from eye*

BETTER TO DIE THAN BE A COWARD!

    LONG LIVE THE BLOODY GURKHAS!

    *fireworks go off over head*
