Seagate's estimate of repair for my drive = $1,000
This fix: $10 + time. You can also send it to me for repair. Please inbox me for further instructions. It is a flat rate of $50 per drive + the cost of US Domestic shipping back and forth (Fedex 2Day is preferred.)

READ THIS FIRST before posting a question that may have already been answered. Thanks!

This tutorial restores Seagate HDDs with BSY error (unrecognized in BIOs) and LBA=0 to normal function.
This DOES NOT FORMAT your drive. All files will be accessible.

******************MATERIALS*******************
Windows 32 bit OS, (XP, Vista, or 7 OS) to be compatible with the drivers I've linked below. 64 bit will not work with these drivers.

*CA-42 cable $3.39USD - search eBay, make sure it is made in China.

*RS232 Female Crimp pins (pack of 25 for $1.49USD+tax) from Frys (in-store) Or packs of 100 online: http://09a18921.urlpulse.net Also try eBay. This is an alternative to the RS232-TTL or the jumper/headers used in other procedures.

*MiniTorx Screwdriver $9.99USD - http://5e409774.qvvo.com

********************FAQ**********************
DETSEC or Spin Up error:
You need to tighten the screws or make sure the PCB is in good contact with the hard drive.

No Response in Hyperterminal:
GND cable is either loose/detached or connected to the wrong pin.

Garbage letters, symbols:
Wires are probably in contact with another (you can put a piece of paper or newspaper in between the pins to prevent them from touching. Also, check for loose wires!

Arrow instead F3 T prompt:
Switch RX/TX wires on the hard drive. Close Hyperterminal and create a new session again.

My PC specs: Windows XP Home Professional/Service Pack 3 (Will work on Win7 with putty and downloaded versions of Hyperterminal)
CA-42: Made in China. Serial#:WTO48000317

Why use the CA-42? Can I use a different cable?
Please do not ask me if your cable will work or not, I honestly do not know. The CA-42 is a tested and verified working cable that has been successful in recovery. This post has pics of USB cables that may or may not work.

Can I plug it in while the computer is on?
Yes.

If for some reason you can't use the SATA power cable, the Gradius2 tutorial above has a method of using a battery (very risky if you don't know what you're doing!)

UPDATE~~~~
Credits to youtuber dezzorian for this pic of the pinouts (5 wire) to locate RX/TX. Thank you!

I suggest not getting the updated firmware for now as they have been known to cause hard drives to re-brick themselves or not function properly. Always back up your files on other media (DVDs, flash drives, etc.

  • hello i my HDD always makes the sound 'beep' when i plug it in :(

windows and bios do not recognize it.

and after is type 'Z' in hyperterminal i got the following error

    LED:000000CE FAddr:00280499

    and it stops beeping :/

  • @MasterOfM1993 is it a beep or a buzz sound? If its buzzing you might have a stuck motor spindle. Don't freeze it or try to get it unstuck because it will only damage the plates (which your data is on) you can try setting the drive sideways or vertically and see if it will respond. Just wait a few min. after turning on the drive before you enter any commands.

  • Thanks a million, I just send you 5 bucks for some coffee! Your Great!

  • @mikevanstaveren Thank you kindly :) The coffee was excellent! Cheers.

  • Does such a bad drive with this error click? I have a Seagate hard drive that clicks but still reads (Taken offline until futher investagation has been done)

  • fun video. I'm not even fixing a hdd but i enjoyed it lol

  • Hi, I've been getting ready to try this for soooo long, but when I spun up the drive after removing the card my computer just shut off. Do you think the surge is knocking out the power supply or is it probably a short in the drive? :(

  • You have an excellent taste in music.

  • this is why seagate harddrives are considered crap are cause of problems they have always had

  • Thank you for this. I was able to fix my Seagate 1 TB Barracuda drive with this. I ordered a CA-42 cable online and mine had 6 wires.

    Here's the 6 wire CA-42 cable:

    RX-Green

    TX-White

    GND-Orange
