Back in June 2011 I returned to the Blue Mountains early on a Monday morning to capture more footage of the trucks and to get a bit of an update on what was being used up there.

There was no surprise seeing one of the massive JJ Richards recycling trucks in Glenbrook, but I also came across one of the smaller recycling trucks in Blaxland during the late morning. The first truck I videoed early in the darkness was the only new garbage truck in the council fleet at the time, another MJ / Acco with a different paint scheme. After this I was surprised to find one of the old Garpac side loaders still on litter bins, but I coincidently found out that a brand new Garwood was sitting in the works depot as a replacement for that particular Garpac. After all this I also caught up with one of the existing garbage trucks during the early afternoon.

However, between all this I had a main priority which was to catch the clean-up trucks on video. The first time I was there I discovered the old Formula 5000 they used on clean-up and was told about the Scania, and at 7am on this Monday I came across this old rear loader. It turned out the old International / Heil was sitting in the workshop, so I got to video the old MacDonald Johnston (E-Z Pack) instead.

Nothing really much to say, but you'll notice this truck is very old and battered... I was almost certain the council would have upgraded by then. Here you get a brief driving shot and a view of the packer handling a couple of sofas.

  • Terrific find! Love it when you can find an old truck still working that you thought was definitely retired...yet there's no doubt about it because it's THERE right in front of you, working! Best feeling ever.

Crazy old sound on this truck, haha the hopper's all warped at the lip there...seen loads and loads of bulk waste huh..Thanks for sharing! Early 1990s maybe?

  • @Trashman242 Just hope I get their International on video before it's too late... that's another one of those trucks which shouldn't be too far off from retirement. Is a interesting sound to this truck, but sounds good in gear hey? :P This'd most likely be from the late 80s, but possibly early 90s, would be good to find out.

  • Great job, these MacDonald Johnston/EZ Packs are some of my favorite rear loaders, and this one's even on a tandem axle chassis! Are there any more of these still running?

  • @georgewuzheer Yeh they're pretty neat trucks, I love the packer on them. They are still around, but can be pretty hard to find these days - mainly the smaller companies which still use them in Sydney. I have a video of another tandem which I got at work, but I would love to get more of them on video before they cease to exist.
