In 1905-1916 Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorsky (1863-1944), an early 20th century Russian photographer and researcher, has created "The Collection of the Splendors of Russia in Natural Colors" - a unique set of color photographs of the Russian Empire on the eve of the October Revolution of 1917.The creation of color photographs in the early 1900's was technically and logistically complex. To capture a color scene, a small, folding hand camera with a vertically sliding plate moved the glass plate three times in one second intervals. At each position an exposure was recorded through one of three filters corresponding to the colors red, green, and blue. After each exposure, the camera's vertically sliding plate dropped to the next position.
The color images displayed here are a product of modern color separation techniques.S.M.Prokudin-Gorsky has made at least 3500 triple negatives registering on a single glass plate three separate black and white images taken through the blue, green and red filters. Each negative is a triple black and white image. Although from some of the negatives Prokudin-Gorsky did make carbro color prints or slides, the author was never able to see his entire collection in color.

  • these photos are ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!! Amazing! They look as if they were made yesterday with a modern digital camera!! And they were made - some of them - one HUNDRED years ago!! Eternal Glory to Mr. Prokudin Gorskii!! I hope that his name will be remembered forever.

PS. it's saddening that there were no photographers during the Ancient Times... The Middle Ages... Or even the Renaissance or later times...

  • Amazing. These were all taken 100 years ago, but still a lot look like as if they were taken with an average 5 mpx compact camera today.

  • Marvellous. Many thanks

  • @OldWaysFollower You're right, but there are phtos from the 1800's in color some of them, daguerrotype and other types.

  • Prokudin Gorsky - sorry

  • Orokudin Gorsky was lucky that he was let out from Russia by the commies. Lucky they let him take the photos. If he didn't run from Russia, he would surely be shot in 1937 or die in GULAG. And now thanks to the US university Russians can see how their Russia looked liked.

I'm sure most of the people on the photos were killed later by bolshies. All those engineers, peasants and other "class enemies"...

And now we have two dwarfs on top killing the remains of Russki country...

  • @antifunki communism was invented by a Jew and all communist leaders were Jews

  • Oh, and regardless of the stupid antisemite here - great pictures, thanks a lot for the uploader! They are the reason why I came to this video and had to waste my time explaining to a bigot why he's an idiot.
