Mabuhay Alliance, Inc., a San Diego based nonprofit organization, was founded with the purpose of enhancing the quality of life of the Filipino-Americans and other Asian and Pacific Islander communities by providing members with networking opportunities and access to resources that are not attainable as a single entity and benefit the community. Its mission is "to be the preferred conduit of economic development, through technical assistance between the government, corporations and minority groups in California." Since 2004, Mabuhay Alliance has worked towards greater representation of minority groups, provision of stable funding, and the development of great relationships with corporate partners and good alliances by providing programs that empower them.
The community Mabuhay servesabout 40 percent Filipino, the remainder Latino, African-American and other Asianswas hit particularly hard. Throughout the housing boom, immigrant and minority borrowers were disproportionately issued high-priced subprime loans, even when they qualified for less expensive, fixed-rate mortgages. One study by the California Reinvestment Coalition found that African-American and Latino borrowers were nearly four times as likely as whites to receive high-cost mortgages.
