"The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada used to cooperate with Cinematheque Quebecoise to host Taiwan Films Festivals and were welcomed by movie lovers here. We are hoping further cooperation in the future to bring more Taiwan movies to Montreal, the cultural capital of Canada," Taiwan's Representative to Canada Dr. David Lee said at the opening reception of Taiwanese Director Edward Yang's retrospective.

Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada (TECO) and Cinematheque Quebecoise co-host Taiwanese Director Edward Yang's Retrospective in Montreal from April 2 to 14. Featuring six films of Edward Yang's, the event serves as a tribute to the late auteur while offering a tantalizing taste of made-in-Taiwan movies.

Dr. David Lee said that Taiwan is a small island country with only 23 million people. Even though Taiwan did not produce lots of films, it does foster quite a few outstanding directors. Edward Yang was one of them. Some of Taiwan's films were very famous around the world, especially in North America and Europe.

Ms. Diane Poitras, programming director of Cinematheque Quebecoise, said Edward Yang was one of the most popular directors in western countries. She said Cinematheque Quebecoise was honored by co-hosting Yang's retrospective with TECO and hopes to continue the cooperation between the two sides in the future.

The first film of the retrospective, "Taipei Story" (1985), was screened at 5 p.m., April 2 immediately after the opening reception. The turnout is successful. Ninety percent of the Cinematheque Quebecoise's theater was seated by enthusiastic Montreal audiences.

The other five works in the retrospective include "In Our Time" (1982), "That Day on the Beach" (1983), "The Terrorizer" (1986), "A Bright Summer Day" (1991) and "Yi Yi" (2000). Among these films, "A Bright Summer Day" and "Yi Yi" won Yang best director awards respectively at the Festival of the Three Continents in 1991 and the Cannes Film Festival in 2000; "The Terrorizer" won best feature film at the Golden Horse Awards in 1986 and best screenplay at the 1987 Asia Pacific Film Festival.

Edward Yang, one of Taiwan's leading New Wave filmmakers, was born in 1947 in Shanghai and grew up in Taipei. Yang was fascinated by film from an early age but put his celluloid aspirations to one side in order to pursue a high-tech industry career. Yang's break came in 1982 when he was asked to direct and write a short, "Desires" (also known as "Expectation"), as part of the seminal Taiwanese New Wave collection "In Our Time" (1982).

Diane Poitras
