  • After listening a few times, I'm sure the drummer is Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge; BBA; etc.). he's my favorite. No wonder I thought he was good upon the first couple listens.

  • @woodhous The drummer is Jamie Oldaker. He was Clapton's drummer from 1974 - 1978/79.

  • @PsychedelicTripster I went around again, PT. The studio version and this performance. I listened closely. 10 times more (open/close) high-hat as Jamie. Fills to the 3rd power! Way more active/aggressive. It's Mr. Appice. (Back to you.)

  • I have listened to this song many many times,Jamie Oldaker is the drummer, next to the Dead drummers and Carter Beuford of DMB Oldaker is my fav drummer

  • Yes this Clapton as I remember him

  • @princeofgary I agree prince. Great performance all around. I think the extra special aggressive and skillful drums are a difference maker.

  • Not dead at all. More convinced than ever. Have a drummer listening so he can chime in. He didn't even know Carmine, but he's learning. To me this is about the same as puzzling over whether you're hearing Clapton or Jimi Hendrix. (You can just tell the difference.)

  • This song still sends chills, then again there are several Clapton songs that do, but this one in particular.

  • Just a great great song. Nice jam, duet, groove...

  • @PsychedelicTripster Ruh roh, tripster! Have you checked the live "Layla" vid (listed on the right) from (apparently) the same Santa Monica event? A drum solo! Is THAT Jamie Oldaker?

  • @PsychedelicTripster Happy New Year, Tripster. (I'm formulating a devastating response. I ask again, can you point me to any other song(s) where Oldaker is that busy, playing those licks..., etc.?) (I was "down but not out." Now, I'm secretly (?) mounting a counter offensive.)

  • AWESOME!!!

  • The man is GOD !
