Those Christians who sided with the South, were the norm as far as the rest of humanity was concerned. Fighting for the freedom of the Black race would have been a puzzling joke for Arabs and Asians. The Christians who fought against slavery were the radically new peoples. And they were willing to spill the blood of their own people to put an end to that evil. Read the literature- it's not esoteric and easily available. It was a very educated population and they wrote plenty- on both sides.

Christianity, and oinly Christianity, was vexed by the tolerance of slavery in its midst. The slave of Rome flocked to the new religion and this angered the Romans. Christianity did not invent slavery, it has been part of the human condition as far back as there were humans. Africa may have even been the birthplace of institutional slavery. But Christianity

As for the topic on Christians supporting slavery: many persons involved in slavery used parts of the Bible to justify it. But let me ask you a question: if I say I am rich, does that make it so? Maybe. Maybe not. I could be lying.

Keep in mind also, the Quaker and Shaker communities, considered at the time to be conservative Christian groups, vehemently opposed slavery, with the Friends committee issuing a decree for all members to free their slaves years before the American Revolution.

Sir, what you have to understand is that the definition of a conservative and a liberal (or traditionalist and progressive) varies over the course of time and location. The progressive nature of Lincoln and the Republican party of his day (anti-slavery) is something viewed now by EVERY one, even modern conservatives.

But that doesn't mean that progressives are always right in any time period.

Read about the southern strategy in 50's and 60's. Also do you know where Reagan gave his speech after nomination victory? In Neshoba county, where three civil rights activist where previously killed. His speech was all about states right which Dixiecrats(southern Democrats)and modern southern Republicans love to hear.
