  • My previous mandolin teacher said to me "Always keep your thumb flat on the back of the neck" and "always wear a strap, even when seated to play". I wish I could have shown this video of Chris to him. I have a new teacher now.

If it sounds this good the technique obsessives can go qwhistle.

  • I would say thee most important thing about the left hand is positioning and relaxation. The thumb should definitely not be restricted to a certain place. The main thing is not to press your palm against the neck. Keep it out and open like Chris does.

  • i'm finally getting around to learning this song!! It's proving very difficult, but it's refreshing to know a song in F#, it breaks up the normal A & D fiddle tune routine. AND IT'S FUN AS HECK!!!

  • @alicelookingglass and also i dont think theres one technique that works for everybody. relaxation is a key thing in my opinion, but as far as holding the pick, as long as you can get good purchace and control and are getting the tone you want, the rest doesnt matter a whole lot.

  • @alicelookingglass For the record, Thile is a technique obsessive too. Your teacher just sounds a little confused.

  • Since when did Paul Rudd gain weight and learn guitar?

  • You know what is really crazy? you may listen to this song and say wow! and think how amazing Chris Thile is on the mandolin, but don't forget that he wrote this song, and he is playing it too! now that is truly Amazing!

  • Absolutely unreal. Thile and Sutton are beasts!

  • Byran's right hand is a machine gun on those strings...
