In this tutorial I show how you can model a high polygon tire tread in Maya... it's 5 videos goin' from poly modeling over a simple UV layout and finally taking a bump map to put it on the tire.

Any comments or critiques are very welcome!

If you have any problems just contact me and I try to help you out :-)

cheers

Stephan

  • When I right click and select Object Mode the tire doesn't get smooth edges... How do you do it?

  • @NoJokeTuning

    I don't know what you mean.... so you might have the same problem as reachtt so check out the comment above this one... if that doesn't help just send me screenshot and I try to help ... send it to pilz@t-online.de

  • @NoJokeTuning

    could you describe that problem a bit more?

  • When I hit hotkey 3, it "arounds" each sub-sections of the tire surface instead of just the outer edges. So there are a lot of little bumps instead of looking like yours. Do you know what is wrong?

  • @reachtt

    yeah I think you have "keep faces together" off..... so go to the channel box (at the right side) and look under the inputs of that extrusion... you'll find the option "keep faces together" ... type in 1 .... that turns it on.

    0 = off

    1 = on

    hope that's what you're talking about :-)

  • what tool did you use on part 9:08. i cant seem to find it on my panels

  • @coronitaflotante

  • @NoJokeTuning press 3 to get smooth preview mode and press 1 to move back to orignal preview. if you want to smooth the complete object then goto Modify \ Convert \ Smooth Mesh Preview to Polygon. (Note- You can only use this option if your are in smooth preview mode by selecting object then press 3 and follow above procedure).

  • @NoJokeTuning press 3 for smooth preview mode.

  • Hi, around 8:40 of the video you selected some vertices and adapt them to 1 unit.

    I set the pivot to a vertex (d+v+mmb), but when I try to move them pressing X, Maya snap all of them to the unit destroying the shape.

    In the video I see they all move snapping but keeping the shape.

    What could it be?

    Thanks in advance and thanks for the tutorials.

  • so how do you know that the piece will fit with the others..?

  • thank you man ! i always had a struggle with the hard surface edges details ... now thanks to your great tutorials i have an idea how it is done : D

  • @NoJokeTuning I already figured it out, the first time you forgot to mention to hit 3... the second time you smooth the edge were teling to hit 3...

  • @NoJokeTuning I Already got the answer... I stopped watching at 3:23, because I didn't understand what whas happening and then you explain at 4:50 that you have to hit "3" to get the smooth edges.
