  • i'm glad holbox still charms! it sure charmed me.

  • how very sad. i was there for a week and very much enjoyed it - tho i must admit i didn't integrate much (i had been in central amer for 5 months and wanted to reflect before flying out of cancun). i did enjoy the island. i bought my food at a local tienda, hung out on my porch in my hammock and walked many beaches. not the way i usually travel but maybe it was better that way!

i still think it is a good place to visit on the yucatan. i hope things get healthier there.

  • I am not quite sure what Holbox some of you saw. We had a great stay (5 days), ate at 7 or 8 restaurants from taco shops to fine dining. Bought groceries, rented golf carts, swam, hunted sea shells, bought trinkets, watched locals play basketball in the town square. I never saw a drunk local (nor a drunk tourist), my wife practiced Spanish any time she could and found the locals responsive in English or Spanish. We snorkeled with Whale Sharks, viewed Flamingos, Rays, snorkeled, reefs, etc, Thanks

  • @kjk10075 No, not everywhere and not everyone. I was there for two years so I have quite a few examples. I had been threatened more than once. Keep in mind there are no police on the island and the owners of the lanchas and ferries controls who comes in and who goes out. It is a very easy place to disappear from.

  • @luckiswhathappens i as welll lived there for some time and found it difficult! The hotels there will often not pay employees and the nonstop parties can get old!! We also felt the locals could be hostile and very money grubbing even though many make a decent living. Holbox would be ok for a week but not for years. Not to mention the mosqitoes!!

  • Holbox is part of Quintana Roo, im from Holbox and i think its a very good place to live, im sad cuz many people from there has alcohol problems but i hope this stops soon...

    Greetings!!!

  • Well i´ve been here for 4 months now and there are people who drink but it happens everywhere... I´ve enjoyed this island a lot, people is very nice and they are making a street back of the hotels so the golfkarts dont pass trough the beach!! They have also painted the whole island buildings in white and brown..i totally love isla holbox

  • Yeah, that it sad to hear. I really liked it there when I visited. I also did not integrate but doesnt everyone drink to much everywhere? Not just Holbox? What kind of hostility did you encounter?

  • well, sadly, it's not all it is cracked up to be. I lived in holbox for 2 and a half years before I left feb. of this year. It is a horrible environment to live in with very hostile locals. Everyone and I mean MOST EVERYONE has alcohol or drug problems. I have seen 6 people drink themselves to death on the island because of the non stop party atmosphere.
