I've studied Buddhism for years, obviously you have not.

If you smoke any herbs to meditate, you've just violated one of the sacred rules of Buddhism.

According to the fifth precept of the Pancasila, Buddhists should refrain from any intoxicants which would prevent mindfulness or cause heedlessness.

They were against using drugs to assist in meditation, because reaching nirvana should be a sober & clean minded process.

@zrhealey if you were really buddhist, you would also follow the eightfold path, which includes "right mindfulness" i.e. not calling someone a "bullshit spreader", and also realize that there is more then just one sect of buddhism. you have to realize that some people still speculate the use of marijuana and mushrooms in early buddhist traditions, under the speculation that the 5th precept is talking about intoxicants such as liquor rather then things that were not labeled an "intoxicant" then.

@PokoWorks "Ancient", uhum. From mid 19th century onwards doesn't qualify as "ancient" for me. Also, the usage wasn't religious, it was the same drugs always do when misused. Caused by the biggest dealer in world history, a.k.a. Great Britain.

Also, China isn't mainly a Buddhist country, it's folk religion with layers of different schools of Mahayana Buddhism, Daoism and (Neo)-Confucianism. Get your facts straight, read some history.

@zrhealey There are only few of us who may reach Nirvana in their lifetime, and the precepts aren't actually taken literally by most lay practitioners. In almost all Mahayana countries, most of society consumes both meat and alcohol, which is against at least two precepts. They are not commandments, they are (awesome) recommendations. Do you know about 濟公活佛? Don't take everything so hard.
