Listen up, pedestrians wearing headphones. Can you hear the trains or cars around you? Many probably can't, especially young adult males. In this video, Richard Lichenstein, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics and director of pediatric emergency medicine research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Medical Center in Baltimore, discusses his research just published in the Journal Injury Prevention. Serious injuries to pedestrians listening to headphones have increased nearly 4-fold in six years, and in many cases, cars and trains are sounding horns that the pedestrians cannot hear, leading to fatalities in nearly three-quarters of cases.

Dr. Lichenstein initiated the study after reviewing a tragic pediatric death where a local teen died crossing railroad tracks. The teen was noted to be wearing headphones and did not avoid the oncoming train despite auditory alarms.

  • It's not rocket science here. It's obviously clear that People's minds are so preoccupied when listening to music while simultaneously walking that paying attention seems so unimportant. It's not an intentional action it's just that the body is so focused on what is seen, head, felt or smelled, that even something as looking across the street as a safety precaution can skip one's mind.

  • AH HAHA.
