The microcredit revolution that brought support for poor families in South America and Asia has not been as effective in Africa, mainly because of the long distances between the recipients and the banks. A new way had to be found. This is the story of an innovative program called Village Saving and Loans, implemented by the organization CARE, which guided small groups of individuals (mainly women) to create their own banks. This revolutionary program requires no capital input and spreads spontaneously throughout the community lifting thousands of families out of poverty.
