Check out this soulful version of the Billie Holiday classic 'God Bless The Child' by legendary Chicago vocal five-piece The Dells, released by Chess Records subsidiary Argo label [Argo 5415] in June 1962.
'God Bless The Child' [MX U11478] is the favorite of Dells lead tenor Johnnie Carter, among all the group's many recordings. "I guess it's because of the harmony." he says.
Flip over the 45 and you'll find 'I'm Going Home' [MX U11477], penned by group member Mickey McGill with his wife Rose McGill.
Sadly, neither of these great tracks is currently available on CD.
The Dells are a true Soul Music institution. Formed way back in 1952, they've been singing together ever since with their virtually unchanged line-up of Marvin Junior, Johnnie Carter, Mickey McGill, Verne Allison and Chuck Barksdale. They can now boast the longest-running consistent personnel of any group in the world.
Doo Wop, Jazz, Northern Soul, Funk, Gospel, Blaxploitation, Disco, R&B, The Dells have done it all. They're Soul Music legends, who've racked up a respectable 46 hits on the US R&B charts from 1950s-90s [eight of these made the Pop Top 40] for Vee-Jay, Cadet, Mercury, ABC, 20th Century, Private I, Veteran, Virgin and Philadelphia International Records. Recognising their half-century together, The Dells were inducted into the illustrious Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in March 2004. www.themightydells.com
