Student Burned By Fireworks

A 12-year-old boy received burn injuries from fireworks set off today at Velma Hamilton Middle School, 4801 Waukesha St.
City of Madison Fire Department firefighters and paramedics were called to the school shortly before noon after the 9-1-1 Communications Center received calls from the school reporting smoke in the building and an injury. Pull stations were also activated and the building was evacuated.
Engine Company #9 arrived to find no fire in the building, but evidence that fireworks had been set off just outside a restroom in the Unified Arts wing of the school. They also attended to the 12-year-old boy with burn injuries. Rescue #2 arrived moments later to treat the patient and transport him to the UW Burn Center.
No other injuries were reported.
City of Madison fire investigators are assisting police in the investigation. Police will determine if any charges are filed.

At 12:55pm, students at Hamilton Middle School (4801 Waukesha Street) in Madison are back in class. Students were evacuated outside for half-an-hour earlier this afternoon.

NBC15 Reporter Zac Schultz saw a student being transported in an ambulance. NBC15 News has learned he is 12-years old. He was transported with burns.

A Dane County dispatcher tells NBC15 News that it appears that fireworks were involved in this incident. It is not known who brought or lit the fireworks.

The incident did occur on the middle school side of the building.
