I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita; Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty, and to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says, 'Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.' I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.

Oppenheimer showed tension and relief during and after the detonation...He volunteered his expertise for the Manhattan project, he understood what was required and the outcome ...The push for the bomb was made all the more urgent because Germany looked like they were close to cracking it more than a swift end to the war with Japan...There is no doubt Oppenheimer was a genius, but owners of brilliant minds are very driven, morality,regret and guilt can often be a afterthought..

on April 5 1945 the soviets actually renounced their neutrality pact with the Japanese and they were completely unable to gain more resources with more diplomatic pressure we could have ended the war with out dropping the bomb but the Japanese are notoriously stubborn and the bomb probably made Americans feel better be cause of the baton death march
