I was introduced to whip cracking when I went to my brother's house for the Easter Holidays. My Sister-in-law's younger brother is dating a young woman who does whip cracking for fun and brought over a 10 ft long nylon cow whip. I said "Let me get a crack at that..." and discovered its a lot of fun and it can be a good workout. I decided to buy a whip and do a little crackin myself. I also decided to research here on Youtube and found a few good videos of whip cracking demonstrations. I will recommend for those who are planning to get into whip cracking, to check out a person who was featured on Discovery Channel's "Time Warp" and search for Adam Winrich. He can be found here on Youtube as well. He demonstrates many different ways to crack a whip with all different types of whips.
The whip I used is an 8 ft Cow Hyde 8 plait Bullwhip bought from a local Western Store.
Little known fact about a whip crack. That signature whip sound that you hear is the tip of the whip exceeding the speed of sound. The tip of the whip known as a cracker or also known as a popper travels at these speeds when a whip is cracked. The tip of the whip creates a small sonic boom that is exactly like the soncic boom created when Chuck Yeager, the famus Air Force Test Pilot who flew the legendary rocket plane called the Belle X - 1 faster than the speed of sound over the Desert in the western U.S. on October 14, 1947. Now sound is a compressional wave which travels at different speeds with different altitudes. This critical speed is known as Mach 1 and is approximately 1,225 kilometers per hour (761 mph) at sea level when the temperature is about 75 degrees.

hi Djluna.how many db make that noise?
michodemar 1 year ago
@michodemar The actual sound made from the whip crack is very directional ... IF you are using a whip and make a good solid crack ...from where you are standing in perspective of where the cracker and fall of the whip is placed... one can experience a decibel level of about 100 to 110 DB... If you stand in line from where the whip crack is directed.... it can easily exceed 130 db.
