Odontotaenius disjunctus
enjoy.

@HomicidexMurreh Nope... not a ground beetle but a Passalid. Odontotaenius Disjunctus to be exact. AKA Patent Leather or Bess Beetle.

This is a Patent-Leather beetle. My four year old son currently has two as pets. They have not bitten us, no matter how we handle them, they just hiss. I played with them all the time as a kid, we called them hissing beetles. I have never been bitten by one.

That's actually not a ground beetle, but a "Bess Beetle." The antennae give it away. Ground beetles have very long ones, whereas bess have the short clubbed ones you see in the clip.

I can solve your problem right here and now. That, my friend. Is a "Ground Beetle". I live in North Carolina, too. And I've stumbled upon these creatures numerous times. They're harmless, well. I would like to think so. You can pick this fellow up, just avoid the mandables. :]
