When Stephen came into our lives I well remember my wife June coming home in an ambulance and being helped upstairs by the ambulance drivers. At that time we lived in a small two up two down terrace house in Bathley Street, just behind the Bus depot in the Meadows area of Nottingham.

Stephen, apart from looking as though he had been sitting in front of a fire, was our new baby boy. I tried to get all the washing out of the way before June came home. Unfortunately I had placed something in the wash that turned everything pink. June waited until the ambulance men had gone, came down the steep stairs very carefully one at a time on her backside, gave me a look, that said just what she thought of me, and did the washing again.

We were very much in love, married at 18, had our first son when we were 19 and Stephen followed when we were 22. Twenty years after Stephen was born we had a third son.

June was a wonderful mother, wife and grandma. Everyone who came into contact with her warmed to her and I have been told many times before and since June died, what a wonderful person she was. Not that I ever needed reminding, I knew how lucky I was. The reason I mention Stephens mother is because we all need good parenting and it takes a caring family and community to bring up a child. This is Stephens story and will be added to as and when time allows.

  • Gwen,

Stephen has surprised me with his piano playing and thank you for your kind comment. Stephen's dad

  • You are a blessing to all. Now my daughter wants to play the piano!

    Sherrie and Emily

  • Dear Sherrie and Emily,

Stephen was very lucky because his piano teacher is a personal friend, and gave him a chance, to see if she could in fact teach him

I sat in on the first two lessons. Thinking he would need help when we got home. To be very honest I could not remember all he had to do, and thought you sink or swim by your own efforts and left them to it.

Our children can achieve in all sorts of ways, it justs takes a little longer to get there and a lot of TLC.

  • Stephen could not have achieved this without the help of his very special and amazing piano teacher Dee Lacey.

Dee has adapted her teaching to allow for Stephens slow learning and it has taken her just over three years to get Stephen this far.

As you can see from the video, he plays with both hands, his timing is getting there, and he is reading music.

    Thanks a million Dee x x x
