But I taught him by just tapping his front legs until he either bended his legs or put his head to the ground. You can even tie one of his foot up and pull him down as your tapping his legs so later on the lay down cue becomes the tap on legs. Once you get the lay down then you can get the sit up. You can shape the sit down through the lyons/clicker method. There is a clicker horse trainer that sells a video that uses no ropes etc on ebay or check amazon the video is really cheap!

Its a process. But there are many ways to teach the lay down and sit though! There are even training videos on to teach tricks!
