  • Coach, I have heard that one should attempt to suck in their stomach to maintain the body line that you speak of. Can you please comment on this? Does this sound like a way to achieve the optimal bodyline?

  • @n8sbug Good queston! First, tucking in the abdominals does prompt the engagement of inner muscles which are stabilizers. And this will help with body line awareness. However, you need to work those muscles dryland too (transverse abdominis and multifidi) which when strong will help your balance in the water.

  • Do you want the hand entry to be in line with the shoulder line or more towards the head (or in between)? Your videos are great. I needed you 25 years ago.

  • Neither, you hand entry should be in a more "V". Outside the shoulder lines a few degrees. This gets the lats involved. If you want to see it done right get Karlyn Pipes-Neilsens swim videos.

  • Thank you for all your tips. This is the second time I take a swimming class and it seems that I just cant' get the freestyle. I feel I start going down in the water once I try taking a breath. Can you help me, what am I doing wrong?

  • Thanks for the comment. Much appreciated. No, I won't be doing a starting block video in the near future. Most of my work is with triathletes and well, they don't use a block. However, a great resource on this is Swimming Fastest by Ernest Maglisho.
